Wonder Book Review 2 - Blake

Wonder

By R. J. Palacio

Retell

August finally started school and his homeroom teacher gave him a folder to do some work in. Everyone was staring at him as he wasn't looking, but when he turned to face them, they all just stared down at their tables. August felt very nervous and was mumbling every word that came out of his mouth until the teacher asked him to speak a bit louder and clearer.

Relate

I can feel how nervous August is because I have experienced being nervous and mumbling, I have also been asked to speak up by the teacher, so I can relate to August's situation at the moment. In the book, August unlocks his lock quicker than the person sitting next to him; I have unlocked a lock quicker than a few other people.

Reflect

Some people in my group think that this book doesn't have much action, I have to admit, I don't think that it does either, but it doesn't mean that I don't like the book. My prediction is that most of the action will come later in the book, I can't wait to read it!!!

Review

I think that by this time, throughout the book the author needed to have described a little bit of August's face, or maybe (hopefully) the author will describe him fully. I noticed that there was a pattern most of the way throughout the book; most of the chapters go for 2 - 5 pages, but I think that the amount of pages in each chapter just keeps getting larger as you go further into the book.

So far I am giving this book a rate of 2 out of 5!!!

WONDER.......

  WONDER.......

by Cassandra Wijaya

During this term, our purple literacy group in 5ST, has been reading an interesting and stimulating book called WONDER by R . J. Palacio.

RETELL:

This book is about a boy named August who is not an ordinary ten years old. August has an older sister named Via. August does do ordinary things but he is unique. You probably wondering what's so unique about August? Well I guess you would know, if you were being stared at and seeing little kids screaming and running away from you. You might guess it, the unique thing about him is his face. He does not look like you or me, his face looks a little strange.

His parents are always trying to protect him but they still want him to go to school. August never goes to school as he is always home schooled by his mum. The reason he doesn't want to go to school is because he feels uncomfortable with his face and is scared that some kids will judge him. He has two or three surgeries per year because he has some small anomalies on his face since he was born.

August's world feels like coming to an end when he has to go to school, until he meets the Principal Mr. Tushman.

RELATE:
 T - S - T - T

As August is scared about his looks he does not want to go to school. I can imagine that he is embarrassed. I have seen a movie where this girl also refuses to go to school because of her spiky hair.

I can relate to this when my face had a sunburn after swimming on the weekend, I was terrified to go to school on Monday and was begging my Mum to stay home or home schooled. Of course, she didn't agree with me & I still had to go to school that day.

REFLECT:
My reflection is why is the book called "Wonder"? Maybe because it makes us wonder what exactly August looks like or how August might wonder how he would feel if he went to school a long time ago instead of being home schooled.

REVIEW:

I like the book a lot because it's funny and entertaining, especially when the dad makes jokes of the Principle named Mr. Tushman. This book touches my heart that I learn not to judge people from their outside appearances. Just like we are not to judge the book by its cover.  What's truly important is the inside or personality of the person. Beauty comes from within.

                                                             Finders keepers by George
I think that Finders keepers is a fantastic book.
Its about a boy named Patrick and he plays a game on the computer named Quest and while he was playing Quest a pop up was in front of a screen.
It said , 'Congratulations  Patrick, you are invited to compete in Finders Keepers. The million dollar T.V game show with fabulous prizes .You're chosen by chance and you take your chance in Finders Keepers. Do you accept the invitation ?.
I think they sent he invitation to the wrong guys because I think it is only for adults and most of the game shows I see on T.V have all adults and not children.
After Patrick got the invitation a few days later he told everyone about the game Finders Keepers and some people didn't believe him .They didn't know about Finders Keepers .
After that they went to the Chestnut Tree Village Shopping centre which was crowded with shoppers and then the loud speaker said there was a lost child and they also announced a special sale and he was on level four .

THE NAME AT THE END OF THE LADDER

THE NAME AT THE END OF THE LADDER
                          by ELENA DE ROO

The Name at The End of The Ladder is a great, imaginative book about a mystery. I think after this you'll all                                       want to read it.

                                        Retell

In Name Bank City at the age of twelve you get a name. You need to go to the Name Bank and get a name chosen, after several appointments with a  counsellor. Before you get a name, you get called the month (or day, like a last name) you were born in. In this story there is a girl called September and she is yet to get a new name. So far, might her new name be Melissa....?

                                         Relate

My name would not be September, I would be February. My 'name isn't Melissa either. But my mum's name is Melissa and in the book it states Melissa means "honey bee". I know in real life Melissa means honey bee too.

                                         Reflect

Where did you get the idea of choosing a name at the age of twelve?
September, speak to your parents about what is going on in the process of getting your new name. They might have gone through a similar experience in their life and may be able to help you.

                                         Review

Elena uses a lot of sophisticated words and personification.
I think the story so far is quite abstract (imaginative). Realistically we don't normally get our name the way Name Bank City does.

I would say the audience would be suitably rated for yr 5 - 7.

I am giving it 3 stars out of 5 stars.

Book Response - Isobel Cassin

                                            "Wonder"

                                                    INTRODUCTION

         Dear Reader,
This term the 5ST Purple Group has been reading a very interesting and engaging book called "Wonder." we all like reading this book very much, and I think that after reading my response you will all want to read it.
          Yours sincerely,  Isobel Cassin.

                                                                         RETELL
The main character in this book's name is August. He has an older sister named Via. August has never fitted in with other children his age. August is not your average kid. He has surgery on his face every few months. August has been home-schooled all his life because of how he looks. So when his parents decide to sent him to school, his life turns upside-down starting with  the day he met the principal of his new school. Mr Tushman.................

                                                                      REFLECT
Question for the author: why did you call the book Wonder? Was it to supposed to make us wonder about things while we are reading the book? And how did you come with the idea for this book?
Advice to the characters: Mum, try to listen to what August wants, not just what you think is best for him! Via, don't be ashamed of your brother, be proud of him and of all he has gone through.

                                                                      REVIEW
I  didn't like how the author hadn't used many metaphors or similes however, I do like how the author writes something like say "August was never invited to any birthday parties" then explains it or gives an example. That strategy helps me to better understand what the author is writing.

                                                                     RELATE
T-T I have read a book before where the boy has a butt for a head and a head for a butt. I can relate that to this book because August also has facial problems. T-S I was taken on a tour when I first started school as well. I can relate that to this book because August is taken on a tour of his new school.

my book review on Wonder by James S

Wonder

Wonder is a great book.  It engaged me and the story line is wonderful.  It is about a young boy who's  face is not like your's or mine, it is strange.  His name is August. From what I have read August's parents are sending him to school even though he dose not want to.  He does not want to go to school because of his face, he thinks that people will judge him.  When he goes on the tour of the school, his mind might be changed after he meets two children and his principle Mr Tushman.

I can see why he might not want to go to school because when the uniform changed at my school I did not what to look different because I thought people would judge me too. I can also relate to why he is worried that the other kids would judge him because I have a friend that is different and some people judge him.

There are some questions I would like to ask the author.  Why did she choose the name Wonder for the book and why did she choose the name August for the main characters name?  These are some of the things I like to think of while reading Wonder.

All together Wonder is a hart warming book with a touching story line and I think the message is that it dose not matter what you look like it is about what's inside that counts.

Wonder book review

Wonder

By R.J. Palacio

Retell

August thinks that everyone will make fun of him because of his face. He is going to a new school, so he gets a tour and meets the principal; Mr Tushman. When he gets to the new school, there are three kids that give August a tour around the whole school, their names are Jack Will,
I think that these kids have set a good example for their school.

Relate

August is ten, just as I am. He has a very good friend that he has known since he was very little, I have one as well. Like all of us, he is nervous to see the kids at this new school.

Reflect

I am wondering why the author didn't describe August and the other characters very well, so I think that the author needs to describe each of the characters a bit more so that people can get a better picture of what's happening.

Review

I like how he includes funny parts every now and again, it is really effective and makes the reader want to read more and more. I think that it is good that you can easily tell when you're up to a new chapter, but I think that each chapter needs to have a number or something so that you know what chapter you are up to, otherwise, you waste time double checking what chapter you are up to.

The Name at the End of the Ladder

The Name at the End of the Ladder

By Elena De Roo

Retell:

September Tuesday is 12 years old, she is old enough to get her chosen name. She is hoping that she gets a driving adventure like name, unlike everyone else at her school who have boring botanical and tree names. When she meets her counselor she is unsure if she trusts him.

Relate:

  • In the story they mention the word 'gesture' a lot, and in class we were looking at the front cover of The Inaugural Celebrations of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. There was a lady who was gesturing to the sun.
  • There are lots of great similes and personification, last term we looked at these writing techniques.

Reflect:

Some questions I have for this book are:

  • Is it a strict city?
  • What does the city look like?
  • I wonder why your name is the month of your birthday before you get a proper name?

Review:

I like this book because the author uses a lot of descriptive language. I like how she uses interesting words to extend our knowledge of vocabulary.

I hope you like my review of this spectacular book if you have any feedback please comment down below what I can improve on.

;p

Our Class Input Session

Today Mrs Spencer and Mrs Standring ran an input session on how to blog. We learnt some interesting ideas.
Angelina learnt that once you are on the page it is essential to write the title on the post title. Serena came to the realisation that everyone can see what is written so it needs to be written in formal language. Nicholas now knows how to log on. Emily knows it is important to use formal language and we need to think about what we are writing - does it convey our message in a positive way? Mrs Standring said,  "Would you say it to your grandma? If the answer is no then don't POST IT!"

Peter's Response

The Goldseekers
By Greg Bastian

Retell: The older brother Kai is the head of the family.

Relate: So I do know this is based in Australia but one of the family speak Chinese.

Reflect: So I think the setting should be in America because Australia is not that far from
China.

Review: I disliked the start of the book because it wasn't interesting but now it's getting a lot more interesting

They have found a shallow cave in chapter 5 and these bad people attacked there mines and harmed them.

There camp has no food, water or shelter because of the bad people, all there is is wounded people.

They haven't found there friends, Kai and miju.

THE GOLD SEEKERS

Retell
The story is about a Korean girl called Miju and her brother who  are forced to be GoldSeekers.  The children have been kidnapped and must now work in the goldfields to try and get enough money to get back home to their family.

Relate
I can relate to the friendship between Miju and Sam.  I can see that they are there to help each other.  I think that my friends and I are there to help each other too.

Reflect
  • Why is it called the Goldseekers?
  • I wonder if this will become clearer as the story goes on?
  • Why is the story only focussing on the children in the story, and not the adults?
  • Will they find their way home?
  • Are they scared?
  • What part will the puppy play?
Review
I'm enjoying that the story is also teaching me about the past. I'm learning about what life was like on the Goldfields, particularly for children on the goldfields.

One day i went in a abounded tunnel with my brothers friends. Other one was when i found a bird with an injured wing like the angel. I have watched a movie with a Angel.
Reflect
You  should have made the start more interesting. How long did this book take you to make and what inspired you to make it. What age limit do you put on this book.
Review
I like how you put some fiction in the book like the Angel {Well at least i don't think}. Make the words a little more easier to say.I like the way you put a lot of similes in.

draft Angel Creek Sally Rippin By Kade

Review
I did'nt like the begining  of chapter one because the auther had named all the charecters late but from chapter two and then on  the pictures in my head were amazing , the simmeles were great and the yext was very creative.

Reflect
The things i wanted to reflect on was. When jelly and here cousins went down to the creek jelly started to talk about the boy that drowned in the pipes near the creek but halfway through when there talking about the boy jelly changes the subject to something in the water .

Relate
The things i want to relate on is that i have been to a creek and swam in it at night but there was't a floating angel it was a big dirty brown log!
Retell
It was christmas eve and jelly and her cousins go down to the creek but they see something in the water it was an angel it had broken here wing if they didnt do something fast she was going to die.
